Online Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

This training is funded by Scottish Government and is free to access for practitioners who work with people who use drugs or alcohol & who live or work in Scotland.

This is a 2 day course running  on [Dates]  from  9:15 am until  1:30pm  on both days via Teams.  You must be able to attend on both days.

Declaration

The Scottish Drugs Forum neither certifies course participants as qualified, accredited nor competent in Motivational Interviewing. As a result of attending the course, participants may not represent themselves as either competent, accredited, qualified, or certified by SDF to provide Motivational Interviewing. Course attendance does signify that participants have undertaken learning and development in the basic concepts and method of Motivational Interviewing and have undertaken some practical experience in trying out this approach.

Please note.

Reflective listening skills are a core component of motivational interviewing practice, so we ask that delegates to this course have received training in, and are practiced in, forming and demonstrating these skills.   As a guide to skill level, the Enhancing Core Communication Skills course that we offer will bring delegates to the right level for this course.  You can book onto the Enhancing Core Communication Skills if you are needing to develop, refresh or update reflective listening skills.

Overview

Motivational interviewing is a collaborative and empowering method which can effectively influence change. Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based method that has been evaluated in more than a thousand controlled clinical trials.

Aim

This introductory training aims to introduce the application of motivational interviewing skills and strategies to help people who present as ambivalent find and build their own motivation for change.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the e-learning module and trainer sessions, you will be able to:

  • define the nature of ambivalence about change.
  • discuss how motivational interviewing can influence change by intentionally evoking and strengthening natural language (change talk).
  • practise the spirit of motivational interviewing, integrated with the OARS counselling skills to evoke and strengthen intrinsic motivation for change.
  • consider the application of motivational interviewing practice within own practice setting.

 

Course Length and Format

This course consists of 8 hours learning using the following format:

Part 1: SDF Motivational Interviewing in Brief Conversations e-learning module (2hrs).  

Please note. Completion of the e-learning module (part 1) is a pre-requisite for attending the trainer facilitated online learning (part 2).

An invitation to participate in part 2 of the training will be emailed to participants on the morning of training once completion of part 1 has been verified.

Part 2: Trainer facilitated online learning over two half days.

Certification of course completion is awarded to participants who complete part 1 and 2 of the course and submit the post-course evaluation form.
