Online Trauma and Substance Use

This training is funded by Scottish Government and is free to access for practitioners who work with people who use drugs or alcohol and who live or work in Scotland. If you are out with these limits, please get in touch and we can discuss other options.

This session will take place via Microsoft Teams and due to finishing at 3.30 pm, there will be a break in the morning, a 30min break for lunch, and a break in the afternoon session.

Aim

This introductory course will support trauma-informed practice when working with people who are affected by trauma and who use substances.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

• Define the concept of psychological trauma.
• Describe how substance use is used as an adaptive coping response to trauma and its impact.
• Identify how to respond to the needs of those affected by trauma at a trauma-informed level.

Course Length and Format

This course consists of 4 hours learning using the following format:

Part 1: SDF Drug Awareness: An Introductory Course e-learning module. 

Please note. Completion of the e-learning module (part 1) is a requirement for attending the trainer facilitated online learning (part 2).

An invitation to participate in part 2 of the training will be emailed to participants once completion of part 1 has been verified.

Part 2: Trainer facilitated online learning over one half day.

Certification of course completion is awarded to participants who complete part 1 and 2 of the course and submit the post-course evaluation form.

Please Note

We recognise that trauma themes can at times be challenging for participants and can cause us to reflect on our own experiences.  We aim to create a safe and supportive environment by offering two facilitators on the course to debrief should anything arise during the course.
